See our videos from the recent EBTJV annual meeting!

in April 2022 EBTJV had a membership meeting at NCTC. Videos are now on YouTube.
In April, EBTJV had its first annual meeting in three years, and its first ever hybrid, in-person/virtual event at the National Conservation Training Center in Shepherdstown, WV.  The main focus was science-based management for protecting, restoring, and enhancing wild brook trout populations. Check out the links below for videos from the conference!
On the first day we heard updates about state programs (MD, WV, and ME), followed by a panel on state trout plans.  We then heard regional and national updates from partnering Chesapeake Bay Brook Trout Workgroup, and the National Fish Habitat Partnership. We also reviewed the history of EBTJV's range-wide brook trout occupancy database, viewed updates to Trout Unlimited's Eastern Brook Trout Conservation Portfolio, and were trained on a new web application to streamline updates to the EBTJV database and maps.
On the second day we heard from scientists and managers about several timely topics relevant to conserving brook trout: how to train people about environmentally sensitive road crossings; what it means to add large woody material to streams ("strategic wood addition") and how/where to do it to optimize ecological outcomes; the utility of eDNA for brook trout management; what is known about how non-native species like brown trout interact with brook trout, especially as waters warm; and the latest research, techniques (e.g. infrared imaging!), and applications for monitoring stream and groundwater temperatures and stream flow to help identify locations of climate refugia for book trout. As a result of the meeting we have a plan for the next update to the brook trout occupancy database and have begun to outline a series of webinar-based learning events.
Most of these presentations are available on our new YouTube playlist. We are adding content like a new brook trout restoration page to our website.  Thanks again to everyone who participated, to the staff from Canaan Valley Institute who assisted with the flow for the hybrid Zoom format, and to NCTC for the beautiful space, delicious food, and stellar AV support!
